With the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang right around the corner, there has been great speculation over what the 2015 Mustang will feature.

How will it drive?

Car & Driver confidently claims that the 2015 Mustang will have an independent rear suspension, sporting a split-and-jointed drive axle. This would only be the second Ford Mustang with an independently suspended rear, the only other factory model being the 1999-2004 SVT Cobra.

Ford’s departure from solid rear axle Mustangs is positive change in the eyes of most enthusiasts, as it finally raises the Mustang to the level of its competitors. With an independent setup, we can expect the 2015 to provide a much smoother ride than its predecessors and you’ll experience less wear on the axle.

The suspension isn’t the only change we can expect in terms of performance for the 2015 Mustang. Buyers may have the option to choose between the base 3.7-liter V6 and an upgraded 5.0-liter Coyote V8, as well as a turbocharged Ecoboost four-cylinder engine. The possibility of a turbocharged four-cylinder excites many who opt for more power, and the Ecoboost component is confirmed by Ford, which could be either a 2.0 or 2.3 liter version. We’ll also see a 2015 Shelby GT500 in the lineup. This GT500 won’t likely feature the current 5.8-liter V8, since it won’t fit into the new body. What is speculated, however, is that it will feature an EcoBoot version of the 5.0 V8.

What about the look?

In terms of aesthetics, little is known or confirmed about the style, but we do know they are developing a new platform for the 2015 Mustang, the S550. It is predicted to be a bit smaller and smoother than current models, and perhaps taking some cues from the Evos look.

With near certainty, we can expect Ford to move away from the “retro” look as of late and towards a fiercely modern appearance for 2015 coupe and convertibles. This will be only the fifth time Ford has created a new platform for the Mustang.

When can we drive it?

So when will we expect to see Ford’s 2015 Mustang? Figure some time in 2014 for an official announcement, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Ford decided to debut it as a 2014.5 Mustang as tribute to its 1964.5 Mustang. With this said, perhaps we should keep our eyes peeled on April 17, 2014, which is exactly 50 years after the first Mustang made its debut at the New York World’s Fair.

America’s addiction and reliance on oil could literally bring us to a halt. Over 50 million barrels of oil are pumped each day to meet the global demand for gas, and America as a nation is the biggest addict of them all. Despite the world’s progress on improving average miles per gallon and fuel efficiency going up, we still use up 18 million barrels of oil daily. In America alone, our fuel dependency means there are 244 million vehicles on the road at any given time.

To save us from our environment’s demise due to our fuel use, car manufacturers are taking great strides to protect our environment. Ford’s 2015 Mustang is among the most spectacular of turnarounds in fuel efficiency. The 2015 Ford Mustang will feature an EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, along with weight reductions and various other fuel efficiency innovations. With progress coming from manufacturers like Ford, we may just be able to save our environment and lower our fuel use. Our future depends on it.

If you have a worn 3-speed transmission in your classic Mustang, it’s time you consider making the swap to a Ford Racing T5 5-speed Transmission.

This world-class T5 transmission is a top quality product, capable of 300 ft/lbs of torque and featuring carbon-fiber 3-4 blocker rings, a 1-1/16″ diameter 10-tooth input spline and 28-tooth output spline, along with a 7-tooth speedometer drive gear. This and the Supreme T5 Conversion Kit includes everything you’ll need to install it in a manual transmission equipped Mustang.

Our very own Doug Geyer, who manages CJ’s eBay sales, recently made the “T5 swap” in his 1967 Mustang convertible. While better fuel economy wasn’t necessarily at the top of Doug’s mind when he decided to make the switch, an increase to your Mustang’s gas mileage is one of the biggest reasons for many. In fact, when asked about which difference he enjoys most between the old 3-speed and the new T5 transmission, Doug says it has to be the better Pennsylvania highway cruising. You’ll also experience a higher top speed and the ability to accelerate faster due to a better gear ratio.

For this installation, we used a variety of parts offered at CJ Pony Parts:

Installation of the T5 Transmission and T5 Conversion Kit isn’t the easiest procedure, but Bill carefully lays out the whole process in an easy-to-follow manner as he makes the swap on Doug’s Mustang. The first step, once you begin work underneath the car, is to remove any headers or pipes that are blocking your driveshaft. Then, remove the driveshaft and the starter and move on to separating the transmission from the bellhousing.

After the bellhousing is removed, Bill works on unfastening the six bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel, which can be a tedious process. Next, the flywheel and equalizer bar are to be removed, and you’ll want to clean the area as much as possible before installing the new transmission.

For installing the Conversion Kit, Bill demonstrates how to put in the new flywheel, clutch pressure plate and bellhousing. Doug has also made the decision to upgrade the shifter on his ’67 convertible to a Pro-5.0 shifter. This shifter has the famous “offset-preload” coil springs that find third gear for you, and also features adjustable positive stops to prevent over extending the shift lever, preventing expensive transmission damage.

Closing out this installation, Bill makes sure the new T5 transmission is in place, and then resecures the four bolts that hold it to the bellhousing. After this, he resecures the crossmember and reinstalls the starter, speedometer gear, clutch cable plate, and other necessary parts for the new transmission.

Once it’s all back together, you’ll want to take it for a test drive and enjoy the experience of the 5-speed transmission in your classic Mustang!

CJ Pony Parts is now carrying the GoPro HERO3: A must have for any Mustang owner who frequents the track or is heading out on a road trip.

If you want to share the incredible sights from your Mustang’s adventures, the GoPro camera line is exactly what you need. This camera allows you to capture professional quality videos and photos by mounting it onto any generation or model Mustang.

There are two ways to visually record your escapades using a GoPro HERO3. The first way is to record your experiences with high definition video in 1080p. The second is by using the camera feature, which features the same high quality capabilities as the HERO2, but comes in a smaller and lighter form. The camera has the option to take several pictures over a period of time or capture impressive still photos.

CJ Pony Parts offers two versions of the GoPro HERO3, which are the Silver and Black Editions.

Silver Edition

The HERO3: Silver Edition is similar to the GoPro HERO2 in that it features high quality performance; however, it is 25% lighter and 30% smaller. Some specifications for the HERO3 include a reduced-distortion aspherical lens combined with user-selectable 1080p ultra-wide, medium and narrow field-of-views, which deliver far more perspective-capture options than the HERO3: White Edition camera.

Sound quality is also boosted on the HERO3: Silver Edition, which has been redesigned from previous models to capture more natural sounds, as well as immersive sounds of more sport-like activities. Along with this, it still features the famous wind-noise reduction of the GoPro line, but in a more improved fashion. This is great for Mustang owners who wish to capture an outside perspective of actions on the track.

Black Edition

CJ Pony Parts also offers the HERO3: Black Edition, which is the most advanced GoPro yet and the more “adventure” model. It is 25% lighter and 30% smaller, but two times more powerful than previous models. This version features a reduced-distortion, six element aspherical lens combined with user-selectable ultra-wide, medium and narrow field-of-views deliver more perspective-capture options than ever before. The photo options on the Black Edition are improved, which boasts three times the performance and two times better quality in low light than earlier GoPro models.

Similarly to the Silver Edition, the HERO3: Black Edition wonderfully captures both subtle, natural tones along with more aggressive sounds. The wind-noise reduction has been further improved, as this is the HERO3 edition best suited for “adventure” like activities.

GoPro HERO3 with the GoPro Suction Cup Mount

Both the HERO3 Black Edition and Silver Edition feature built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to control your HERO3 in a hands-free fashion. The Black Edition comes with a Wi-Fi Remote (an optional accessory for the Silver Edition), which allows you to control up to 50 Wi-Fi enabled GoPros from up to 600 feet away.
Dreaming of a vacation in the near future? You’re not alone! At least 136 million Americans plan to take at least one leisure trip over the next six months. Just in time for the summer vacation planning season, it’s time to think about trying something new this year: a suSTAYnable vacationing. It’s a new spin on staycations (a trip that focuses on day trips to local attractions), which were especially popular during the Great Recession.

</ br>

Although our economy is improving, there’s still a constant increase in air fare, hotel and rental car prices. These costs have probably left you wondering about the dent your upcoming vacation is going to put in your wallet. But have you considered the seemingly unnoticeable environmental and economic impacts of a traditional vacation? Air travel alone accounts for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Becoming a local tourist will reduce your carbon footprint while drastically decreasing travel costs. That means more money for flavorful food, entertaining attractions and nostalgic souvenirs. Not to mention you’ll be supporting the communities and businesses that help you thrive on a daily basis.

</ br>

This infographic breaks down the positive impact of suSTAYnable vacations and explains why you should go green, save cash and stay at home sweet home.

After a long winter, spring has finally arrived and everyone on the Gotta Have Builds team was excited to finally be able to get Gotta Have It Race down to the track for some much needed quarter mile therapy. On Saturday, April 20, JLP Performance’s Ford Shootout became the first drag racing event of the year. See how the team did…

Gotta Have It Race waiting to get on the track.

Last November, Bill and Gotta Have It Race were able to run consistent 11.1-11.2 passes with a best of 11.05 seconds at 123 MPH on a cold day with mine shaft air at Cecil County Dragway. Back in November, Gotta Have It Race was on Hoosier slicks and managed a 1.52 60 foot time. Since then, the team has added about 100 lbs. of weight in the form of a Maximum Motorsports 6 point roll bar and changed the shocks out for a set of Lakewood 50/50 drag shocks.

Early in the morning on Saturday, the Gotta Have Builds team gassed up and headed to Cecil County Dragway for JLP Performance’s Ford Shootout. The air was cool, but not as good as the last time out, so Bill wasn’t expecting to break any records and was just looking forward to making some passes and getting some data out of Gotta Have It Race. They arrived at Cecil County and found a nice selection of quality cars already there, so they started getting Gotta Have It Race ready to race.

Their day was almost over before it started when they found a broken valve stem on the front tire, but the team was able to make a temporary repair so Bill could run for the day. They raised the front tires to 45 PSI and dropped the slicks down to 15 PSI, then Bill headed to the line for the first pass of the day. Gotta Have It Race ended up being the first car down the track and Bill had no idea what the prep was like, so he decided to start with a 5000 RPM launch and see what happened. The track had more bite than expected and the tires shook badly, so Bill lifted, then got back in it and went 11.52@122 MPH with a 1.688 60 foot. Given the shake and the lift it was a promising pass.

Gotta Have It Street on display while Gotta Have It Race cools between passes.

Bill took Gotta Have It Race back to the pits, cooled the car down and lowered the tire pressure to 13 PSI so the tires would take more hit and hopefully not shake like the first pass. For his next pass, Bill did his usual second gear burnout and brought Gotta Have It Race to the line. The track was working so he went with a 6000 RPM launch and the car hooked better than ever before! His 60 foot was a 1.503, which was very close to the 1.40s that the Gotta Have Builds team was looking for. Three power shifts later and Bill was rewarded with an 11.19@121 MPH, which was pretty much on par with his November passes but in worse air.

The new Lakewood 50/50 drag shocks were working well with our combo, so it was time for a Hail Mary pass. The team let Gotta Have It Race cool down for an hour, then headed to the line with 12 PSI in the tires. Bill did his normal burnout and pulled the line. Caution was thrown to the wind as Bill revved Gotta Have It Race to 7000 RPMs and dumped the clutch. The car left HARD as Bill pulled both wheels off the ground on the way to a 1.501 60 foot. Again, so close to hitting the goal! Everyone felt that Bill should have been bracket racing, since he ran a near identical 11.17@122 MPH, which ended up being the best run of the day. Bill ran several 11.2 passes and had some great runs versus some other 5.0 powered cars.

Some of the competition cooling off between passes.

Overall, it was a good and competitive day at the track. Everyone had a great time at the Ford Shootout and they are certainly looking forward to getting out on the track some more as the 2013 racing season unfolds.

While the Gotta Have Builds team doesn’t quite have their 2013 racing schedule nailed down yet, you can check out the CJ Pony Parts events page, where that information will be posted as soon as it is available.

Do you want all the features of a modern stereo, but the vintage in-dash look of the original radio in your classic Mustang? Well, now you can have just that!

RetroSound has recently rolled out their new Model Two AM/FM radio, the first classic car stereo that works with iPods and iPhones. USB and auxiliary inputs connect your iPod or iPhone to the stereo for full control through the Model Two’s faceplate, while also charging your device.

Another advanced feature by RetroSound is that this radio is Bluetooth enabled, allowing you to stream internet music from sources like Pandora and Spotify. The Bluetooth feature also allows for hands-free calling, utilizing your car’s speakers and automatically muting the music whenever a call is in progress.
The design of the Model Two radio will match the look of your classic Mustang, featuring an authentic push button design and either black or chrome faceplate and buttons. Furthermore, the LCD illumination display is customizable, with several colors to choose from for the text. This text shows song specific information like the track number and track time, as well as the artist, the name of the song, and the album in which the song appears.

Installation

The RetroSound Model Two radio will fit in any classic Mustang, and with a little time and patience, installation is an at home job. In CJ’s installation video, Bill demonstrates how to connect and mount the Model Two radio in our Weekend Wrench project car.

First, after removing the old radio, you’ll want to remove your ignition lock cylinder and then separate your ignition switch from the bezel so you can access the ignition wiring to get power for your new Model Two. Run your new stereo wire over the stud on the back of the ignition switch and then install the spacer. Once this is completed, you can return the switch into the dash; Bill provides several helpful tips on how to do this easily. Then, you’ll need to install a ground wire underneath the dash and connect your new radio to make sure everything works correctly, before completing the rest of the installation and reassembly process. Next, since the Weekend Wrench still has the original AM radio speaker, Bill decided to take advantage of the stereo capabilities of the Model Two radio and installed a new stereo speaker in the dash.

RetroSound’s “InfiniMount” system, which provides flexible mounting options, makes this radio capable of fitting in any Mustang. This shaft/bracket system will come with a vehicle specific bezel, shift and knob kit which requires assembly. Once this kit is assembled, you’ll connect your wires to the Model Two, fish it up under the dash, and fit it in place in the old radio’s slot. Secure the washers and bolts and install the knobs. Total installation only takes a couple of hours, then you’ll be enjoying much better sound out of your classic Mustang.

Make sure to check out our selection of RetroSound Model Two radios today to enjoy iPod/iPhone compatibility, Bluetooth streamed music, and hands-free calling all with top quality sound, yet maintaining the classic look you want for your Mustang.

If you’re looking to replace or upgrade your faded and worn seats with new, top quality interior upholstery, one brand name is the first to come to mind. TMI Products, originating in California, is an industry leader in Mustang upholstery, seat foam, consoles, door panels, headliners, and many other Mustang interior products.

TMI will help you personalize the look you want for your Mustang’s interior without sacrificing the comfort of your seats. TMI Mustang products are built for any classic Mustang and range in look from performance based, to original vintage or modern style, which will compliment any interior design you’ve chosen. Learn more about the TMI Upholstery line and its different series products: TMI launches new Sport R and Sport II…

Installing new upholstery can be a bit intimidating, but Bill and Ben show this process step-by-step and provide several helpful tips in this installation video. The specific TMI product they’ve chosen to install is the TMI Sport II upholstery and TMI Sport II foam. These are two of the most aggressive, performance inspired upholstery products on the market, yet they still maintain the classic vintage look.

TMI Upholstery Sport II Series 1965-1966

TMI Upholstery Sport II Series 1967

Mustang TMI Upholstery Sport II Series Seat Standard/Deluxe 1968

The first step in installation is to disassemble your original seats. Ben and Bill work first on the seat back, which includes removing the original screws, backing and hog rings. Taking apart the upholstery and seat foam will reveal the original canvas; if yours is in good shape, you can reuse it. Then, you will place your new TMI seat foam snugly around the outer edge of the seat frame.

TMI Upholstery Sport R Series Mach 1 1971-1973

Installing the new TMI upholstery can be a bit tricky, so we suggest turning it inside out to make the listing channel more accessible. Placing the listing wire in the listing channels are tricky, but once that is completed, you’re ready to secure the upholstery onto the seat foam. Push the listing rods into the channels of the seat foam even on both sides, and then connect the listing rod in the upholstery with the listing rod in the seat foam with hog rings.

After it’s secured, the trick with stretching the upholstery is to begin with one corner and move towards the other corner. Make sure to continue working out all the wrinkles by carefully pulling and stretching the upholstery. Once half the upholstery is wrapped around the foam, secure the rest of the listing channel on each side. Then, finish stretching the upholstery over the bottom of the seat, and make sure the edge of the upholstery matches with the edge of your foam. The tighter the upholstery is stretched across your seat, the more durable and long lasting it will be.

To attach the TMI upholstery to the back frame of the seat, you’ll use hog rings across the top and both sides. Also, make sure to secure all of the extra piping to the metal springs, with only a little bit of tension. The last part to installing TMI on your upper seat is to secure the seat back using door panel clips. Bill advises to start at the top of the seat and work your way down.

The process to replace your seat bottom is very similar to the seat back, except the listing wire is already installed in the TMI upholstery. Once the upholstery is secured around the seat foam, you will notice the seat back stud trying to poke through. Make a small slit so that it pushes through the upholstery and install the washers over the studs.

Installing your seat back to your seat bottom isn’t difficult, but make sure to pay close attention the steps Bill and Ben use to make this process quick and painless.

When you decide to upgrade or replace your Mustang’s seat upholstery, you can’t go wrong with TMI Products. They provide quality, durable upholstery in several product lines to match any interior style you want for your Mustang.

Doug’s 1967 Mustang convertible began its life in the fall of 1966, when his wife’s Aunt Joan ordered it shortly after she landed her first teaching job. It is a pretty rare combination, since the black interior was not standard in the dark blue Mustangs–beige was. The salesman even tried to talk Joan out of the combination, saying the black and blue car would look like a bruise. However, that’s what Joan wanted, so she ordered it, along with a handful of other options, like stick shift.

Over its life with Joan, it’s been all over the East Coast, from Maine, to Pittsburgh, to Daytona Beach for spring break. On a few of the trips, it’s been jam packed with luggage and supplies, with rubber rafts even tied to the roof! It was only ever in one minor accident–another driver smacked it when pulling out of his driveway, causing a family friend to have to put a good bit of body work into it to make it look like new again.

However, once Joan’s children came along, the Mustang convertible stopped being a daily driver and sat for nearly 40 years before Doug bought it. In March 2011, Joan and her husband, Ken, decided it was time to pass it on to another good home: CJ’s eBay sales guy, Doug.

Doug bought it and had it immediately towed to CJ Pony Parts for some much needed work, especially after sitting for so many years. To get it back on the road and ready for car shows, Doug had to install and upgrade a few things:

After this large batch of parts was installed and after several months of waiting for the work to be done, Doug’s 1967 Mustang convertible, named Joannie in honor of his wife’s aunt, was back on the road! He spent more than a year driving around the Central PA area (usually with the top down) and entered it in several car shows during the summers.

Doug’s well known around CJ’s for his fleet of cars, and he’s invested a great deal of time into working on each of his many automotive projects. His fleet currently includes a 1993 Mercury Capri convertible, a 1976 Ford F150 farm truck, a 1973 Volkswagen Fastback Type III, a 1988 Suzuki Samurai Tin Top 4×4, a 2010 Volkswagen EOS, a 2000 Volkswagen Golf GTI, a 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, plus a few motorcycles, in addition to his classic Mustang. Doug’s always talking about selling cars and adding more, but the one car he never mentions selling is his 1967 Mustang convertible–just all the plans he has for it–so we’re sure this family heirloom means a lot.

Doug’s Mustang is going to be at CJ’s first Cruise Night on Friday, April 12 from 6-9 p.m., then at the Capital Bible Church Car Show the next day, Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. He’s pretty positive those are just the first two of many car shows and cruise nights you can see his 1967 Mustang convertible at in 2013. For 2014, he’s very excited to attend Mustang Week’s 50th anniversary celebration.

We invite you to come out and see his 1967 Mustang convertible at these, or any of the other cruises and car shows he’ll be attending. Plus, you can meet Doug and hear more about his beautiful Mustang. Come out and check it out!

Flowmaster is an aftermarket performance exhaust manufacturer that actually began on the California race tracks in 1983, leading the way in early automotive exhaust science. For the past thirty years, Flowmaster has evolved far past the race track, becoming one of the most asked for exhaust and muffler brands in the Mustang world.

They specialize in exhaust systems, mufflers, exhaust kits, racing and stainless steel mufflers, and exhaust accessories for any year Mustang, from 1965-2004. The unique sound of the Flowmaster line is available in tones ranging from mild to aggressive. This caters to those who appreciate a more mellow resonance, as well as those who like a higher output.

Exhaust Kits

One of Flowmaster’s most popular aggressive-tone line of exhausts is American Thunder. This series provides a higher output exterior sound, while delivering more torque, throttle response, and overall power to your Mustang. CJ Pony Parts offers several products in the American Thunder series for any year Mustang.

Daily drivers interested in a more limited but still enhanced tone should consider the Force II exhaust system. This system increases your Mustang’s performance, but has a mild resonance that is perfect for daily driving. CJ’s carries the Force II system for many model Mustangs.

Mufflers

If you’re only looking for a muffler instead of a full exhaust kit, we offer several product lines from Flowmaster that range from mild to aggressive in tone. For example, those looking for a more intense, throaty sound, check out the Super 44 Series, 40 Series (regular and Delta Flow), and Super 40 Series. For a much more moderate tone, we offer the 50 Series and the Super 50 Series mufflers.

Here at CJ’s, we know how important quality exhaust sound is for any year Mustang. That’s why we’re proud to carry several exhaust and muffler lines that range in resonance from mild to aggressive, and offer better torque, throttle response, power and increased fuel economy.

If you’re in the market for a new exhaust system or muffler, Flowmaster makes the perfect product to fit your Mustang and CJ’s offers it at a reasonable price!
