As the summer winds down and the temperature cools down, the schedule for Gotta Have Builds has been filling up, especially for this past weekend. In fact, the Gotta Have Builds team was going to be busy from Friday through Sunday, with some racing, a car show, and autocross on the agenda during the weekend.
Friday Night Street Racing
After the great time everyone had a few weeks ago, the weekend started with plans to take both Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street up to Beaver Springs Dragway for their Friday Night Street Racing. However, a nasty thunderstorm came through late that afternoon, which forced the team to cancel those plans.
Supercars on State Street
For Saturday, Gotta Have It Street was registered for the Supercars on State Street car show, which was being held in front of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg and benefited the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The Gotta Have Builds team knew that the massive SSBC Force-10 14″ Front Brake Upgrade Kit and the SSBC Force-10 Sport R1 13″ Rear Brake Upgrade Kit, plus the handful of carbon fiber parts from Trufiber that were just installed on Gotta Have It Street would fit in nicely with the supercars and exotics at the show. With the Ford Racing 19″ x 9″ and 19″ x 10″ SVT Performance Pack Wheels and Eibach Coil-Over Damper Pro-Street-S Kit, Gotta Have It Street also has the stance to match the exotics.
The turnout for the Supercars on State Street was fantastic. There were about 120 cars that came out for the event, filling State Street between the Capitol Building and Front Street at the Susquehanna River. There was a very wide variety of cars on display, from a 1950s Porsche Speedster and Lotus SuperSeven, to the just released Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren MP4-12C! Several Mustangs were also in attendance, including a variety of beautiful Shelby GT500s, a yellow 2003/2004 Cobra and a very nice 2005-2009 GT with a Cervini Eleanor kit. Several Ford GT supercars were also on display.
The Gotta Have Builds team had a great time at the show, chatting with dozens of other drivers and visitors, plus getting the chance to see some of the most amazing exotics and supercars in the area! They’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
On Sunday, the Gotta Have Builds team had plans to finally get back out and do some racing! Rick and Dan, CJ’s Webmaster, signed up to race Gotta Have It Street in the Susquehanna Region SCCA’s autocross event. The event was held in the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex’s parking lot. Sunday’s event was a double autocross event: One race would be held the morning and one in the afternoon. That gave Rick a chance to get a lot of seat time, since he was signed up for both sessions. Dan planned on running only in the afternoon event.
Rick and Gotta Have It Street arrived at the Farm Show early on Sunday morning to get checked in and get a tech inspection. After that, Rick walked the course a few times to get familiarized with it. Having the event at the Farm Show allows for a very large, fast and open course, which is perfect for the heavy, high horsepower Mustang GT.
The first car went off at 8:30 a.m., which was before the sun had a chance to come out and warm everything up. The first run in Gotta Have It Street was a very tentative 68.41 seconds. Between the cold tires and the dusty course, the grip levels were very low. With each run, Rick was able to go quicker and quicker as he learned the course and got more comfortable with the car. Throughout his runs, he learned to really lean on the massive 14″ 8 piston SSBC brakes. His second run was 66.59 seconds, followed by a 64.87 and finishing up with a 64.62. His best time was only good enough to finish 43rd out of 63 entrants. Rick felt that the car still had a decent amount of understeer on the tighter turns and he still wasn’t using the new SSBC brakes to their maximum potential.
For the afternoon session, Dan joined Rick and co-drove Gotta Have It Street. It had been years since Dan had autocrossed and, even then, he never autocrossed a rear wheel drive Mustang. To add to Dan’s challenge, he hadn’t ever driven Gotta Have It Street, so he had to quickly get used to the 363 RWHP, Eibach suspension and the massive brakes from SSBC.
The course was unchanged for the afternoon session, so it was going to be faster after all of the morning runs had cleaned the course. The sun was also starting to peak through the clouds, which warmed up the tarmac. In the afternoon, Rick was the first to go. He ran a 64.37, which was a slight improvement over his best time from the morning session. Dan was next, and he used his first run to learn the course and learn the car. He ran a very conservative 78.41. With each run, Rick and Dan kept on improving their times. Rick ran a 64.14 and then a 63.73, while Dan improved to 70.38 and then 68.78 seconds.
Rick and Dan noticed that, with each run, the BF Goodrich KDW II 255/35-19 and 275/35-19 Tires kept getting hotter and stickier. The SSBC brakes were also getting warmer, which allowed them to really haul down the car. Unfortunately, on Dan’s last run, he missed a cone and went off course, nullifying his time. For Rick’s last pass, he was able to pick up a full second and run a 62.73. The course had two high speed sections with hard braking zones and, on the last run, Rick went faster and deeper before braking and the SSBC brakes really slowed down the car.
With a two second improvement over his morning time, Rick was able to improve to 31st out of 82 entrants. Dan finished 12th out of the 20 novice drivers in the afternoon session.
The Gotta Have Builds team had a great time this weekend at the car show and autocross events. They plan to continue to keep busy this coming weekend. On Friday night, Rick and Bill will try again to visit Beaver Springs Dragway with both Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street. Then, on Sunday, the Susquehanna Region SCCA chapter will host another double autocross event, and Gotta Have It Street will be ready to race with Rick and Dan behind the wheel!
