Rent a Shelby Mustang…coming again soon?

With the 50th anniversary of Shelby on the horizon in 2012, a Shelby Mustang might soon be coming to a Hertz location near you. That’s right, starting in the spring of 2012, probably for a limited time only, Hertz might be stocking the 2012 Shelby Mustang GT-H with 400+ horsepower.

This “rent-a-racer” program dates back to 1966, when Shelby produced 1,000 copies of the performance Mustang for rental to wide success. Forty years later, the company ran the program again, and again it was quite popular with enthusiasts. After the program’s conclusion, those GT-H cars were sold.

This time around, the program will feature Shelby Mustangs with the naturally aspirated 5.0 V8 and more than 400 horsepower, along with two traditional Shelby color configurations: black and gold, and white and gold.

Visiting the Hertz website, the company currently only offers the “adrenaline” collection which features a Mustang GT Premium, but the “rent-a-racer” program is possibly returning for 2012. Shelby is still working to finalize details and gauge interest. As always, check back and we’ll let you know when you can rush out and rent a Shelby Mustang for the weekend!
